Emerging Substances of Abuse

There is an increasing concern regarding the recreational use of emerging substances (i.e. tianeptine, xylazine, delta-8 THC) and the complications that surround them. Tianeptine, an atypical tricyclic antidepressant, along with xylazine, a non-opioid sedative not approved for human use, and delta-8 THC, a cannabinoid derived from the cannabis plant, have all emerged as potential substances for abuse. Dr. Scott Whetsell is a dual board-certified pediatrician and addiction specialist. Currently, he practices in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and treats patients for various concerns, such as alcoholism, substance abuse, detoxification, and smoking cessation. Dr. Whetsell serves as the Regional Medical Director for Sandstone Care which provides age specific treatment for adolescents and young adults suffering from substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders. He is a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine where he co-chairs the Public Policy Committee. Dr. Whetsell is committed to the well-being of all his patients and believes in customizing treatment plans to meet their needs and lifestyle.
